What Is ENUM?
ENUM (E.164 Number Mapping) is a globally approved protocol that allows traditional telephony systems that work on a switched network to connect to modern Internet Protocol based networks and its applications using a domain name.
A telephone number is translated into an Internet address, similar to the way a traditional domain name is associated with a specific IP address. This allows ENUM to transform a common telephone number into a universal identifier for across a wide spectrum of communication mediums including voice, fax, e-mail and SMS. Essentially, ENUM gives you a single number; commonly called a “Find me, Follow Me” number that will allow you to configure how you will receive communications based on the specific criteria of your physical location or time of day via intelligent routing technology using DNS.
